Forest School and Outdoor Learning

Welcome to our new Forest School page!

What is Forest School?

According to the FSA (Forest School Association), Forest School offers all learners regular opportunities to achieve and develop confidence and self-esteem, through various learning experiences in a woodland or natural environment.

Forest School is a long-term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting.

At Strike Lane we believe that Forest School gives children the opportunity to acquire and develop new skills, that they wouldn’t normally use in the classroom. During our sessions, children have access to free play such as the mud kitchen, den building, bug hunting, plant and tree identification and much, much more. Our Forest School leader will also facilitate activities such as tool work, weaving, knots and fire lighting.

Where appropriate, Forest School sessions can link to the curriculum, often developing on the history or science topics being taught in school.

Our Forest School area is being continually developed and adapted for the needs of the children. Watch this space for more developments!

Forest School Outdoor Learning Yearly Overview 2023

Year 4 have had a lovely few weeks in their Forest School sessions.

We have made medieval medallions, built dens, toasted bread and made jewellery.

Come rain or shine we were out there living the Anglo Saxon life.

Whole School Growing Project with The Royal Society

Before we broke up for summer, as part of a year long science project, the children in each class grew a vegetable or a herb or helped affect the growth of other plants. The culmination of that project was some lovely veg, and some recipes that were prepared in school. Below is a link to a recipe book and growing guide inspired by that project.

If you click on the image you will be able to open the PDF with clickable links. If you have kindle or iBooks you will be able to send the document to those apps and read it, somewhat, like a real book and use the links to go to pages from the contents and back again from each page.

However you read it, we hope you enjoy the fruits of our hard word.
