Welcome to Year 1

Happy new year and welcome back! We hope you had a lovely break and are delighted to welcome you back into Beech class. In Year one, you will find Mrs May and Mrs Richards and we are so excited to share all of our wonderful learning that we do throughout the year.

To start off our literacy work this half term, we will be reading the classic tale ‘The Enormous Turnip’. We will look closely at the characters and plot, before we make changes to write our very own version of the story.  We will be developing our reading and spelling within our daily phonics sessions, and children be encouraged to use these skills within their writing. In maths, we will begin the term by revising place value and our knowledge of number. We will then learn about 2D and 3D shape, measures and times tables. These sessions will involve developing children’s fluency, problem solving and reasoning skills.

During the Spring term, our science focus is on plants and trees. This topic provides lots of practical learning through planting seeds and exploring the school grounds.  Within our science lessons, we will continue to  enhance our scientific enquiry skills as we make observations and comparisons and learn about different plants and flowers. Our geography topic this half term is the UK and we will spend lots of time exploring maps and atlases as we become more familiar with the capital cities in the UK. We will also be continuing to develop our ICT skills as we become more familiar with working on the iPads and with using Showbie to record and edit our work.

Once again this half term, Thursday afternoons will be dedicated to outdoor learning! We have thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor learning we have completed so far and are looking forward to exploring more out the outdoors, especially once the weather starts to warm up! Please remember to make sure your child has a coat and wellies in school on these days- we will be outside in all weathers!

Our PE days are indoor PE on Mondays and outdoor PE on Fridays so please ensure that you have your PE kit in school on these days. The aim of our PE sessions this half term is to develop a our dance and overarm throwing skills. During our art sessions we will be explore the work of Georgia O’Keefe, and use her paintings of flowers to create our own clay sculpture.

Homework will be sent out via Showbie on Fridays. Please support your child with the completion of these tasks and encourage you child to read regularly at home.

If you have any queries, please do not hesitate to speak to one of the Year one team.
